Whites Talk White Privilege : Penetrating The Silence

G. Rasheeda Ayanru, Ed.D

This presentation explores the use of online discussions and critical reflection assignments as a way to incorporate learning activities that engage pre-service teachers in mutual dialogue about white privilege that respects their place in the learning process. It will illustrate how the incorporation of societal racism in the instruction and curriculum of pre-service teachers is an important contribution to their professional knowledge. The goal is to engage them in a critical examination of a broad more complex picture of the social and moral dilemmas present in teaching students of color. My presentation will show that the additional perspectives pre-service teachers gain encourages them to think about how they might create more socially just democratic school environments.
