Overview of the Le Moyne College
Cultural Competence Initiative Grant

This will be an overview presentation of the project funded by HRSA grant No. D57HP05130, including the following

·         Who: Linda Allison, Mark Archambault, Sandy Lane, Llamara Milano-Padro, Mary Springston, Beth Cappelletti, Bill Holmes, Norb Henry, and others

·         What: This project is designed to address significant health disparities to meet the goals of Healthy People 2010.This project has four major goals:

o       Develop and implement a model problem-based curriculum in cultural competence that can be offered via distance learning or in the classroom.

o       Develop community-based linkages to enhance the placement of students into agencies serving a diverse population to provide students with an opportunity to develop cultural competence skills within the context of multicultural communities and populations.

o       Increase ethnic and cultural diversity within the faculty, staff, and student bodies through active recruitment and support.

o       Increase the number of graduates who provide culturally competent care to diverse and underserved populations.

·         Why: There are significant health disparities in Syracuse and surrounding area, accounting for excess morbidity and mortality in people of color and other disadvantaged populations.

·         When: July 2005 – June 2008

·         Where: Le Moyne College, Syracuse and surrounding communities

How:  Develop learning objectives (content, behavioral), integrate objectives throughout curriculum, use problem-based learning, distance learning, experiential learning through clinical placements, community partnerships to improve awareness and outreach activities (e.g. SWCC dinner conference).  Various activities that we have undertaken will be described
