COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES.

The course seeks to develop the four skills ( listening, speaking, reading and writing) that are part of learning a language. Students will get acquainted with some French culture too.

Unit 6 through 10 will be studied during the semester, if time allows it. In unit 6, we will learn how to reserve a room in a hotel and how to compare people or things. Different pronouns will be studied too. In unit 7, you will learn how to describe your symptoms when going to a doctor's office, and the use of the subjunctive after verbs of emotion and doubt will be studied. In unit 8, you will learn how to make a date and fix the time and place, and how to use the conditional. In unit 9, you will learn the various phases of the life cycle and how to talk about friends. Reflexive verbs and relative clauses will be studied. In unit 10, you will learn how to talk about what you plan to do in the future, and how to describe your personal qualifications. You will study the use of the infinitive after a preposition, the past infinitive, the present participle, and how to use the subjunctive after certain conjunctions.
You will have to see two feature-length movies in the library.
The course will be conducted in French but the grammar will be explained in English. Class time is above all, used to develop listening and speaking skills (in dialogue between students and teacher, and in group work). Class activities are in French and students are expected to participate very actively. Accuracy is essential in oral and written work.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Classwork
Students have to come to class well prepared: the new vocabulary should be memorized, the grammar studied, the written assignments written and the readings read at least three times.
Students have to listen to the tape which accompanies each lesson. This is essential for listening and speaking development. The tapes are in the library but the Audio-visual Center will duplicate the current lesson on the cassette submitted by each student.
The two movies "Au revoir, les enfants!" and "Rue Cases-Nègres"are on reserve in the library, and it is required to see them before the date indicated in your syllabus.

Absences.
Attendance in class is required. Any absence will lower the weekly grade given for oral participation and performance, and a maximum of five absences is allowed before the final grade is lowered. Absences due to illness and/or emergency may be excused with appropriate documentation.

Exams.
Plus and minus grades will be given in the course.
An hour exam will be given at the end of each unit (not for unit 10 which will be tested in the final exam). If sick (appropriate documentation is needed), students should call me the same day the exam is given so that an exam is rescheduled for them.
The final examination is comprehensive and will be held during exam week.

FINAL GRADE.

The final grade is made up as follows:
oral participation and performance in class 25%
written assignments 5%
exams 40%
final exam 30%
