Rationale

The number of ordained ministers, i.e. presbyters and deacons, is becoming insufficient to respond to the needs of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States in general and in the Diocese of Syracuse in particular.  Le Moyne College would like to establish a program which would respond to the need for ministers in the Diocese of Syracuse.

Method

Le Moyne College will establish a program to complement those of the Diocese of Syracuse to train pastoral ministers to promote the life of their parishes.  A “parish” is understood as a canonical entity under the immediate supervision of an ordained pastor, even if absent, and ultimate supervision of the bishop.

Academic Component at

Le Moyne College

Finances

Students may pursue this program in one of two tracks:

  1. one by which they are sponsored by their parish and have the approval of the Diocese.  The cost for each course will be divided in three: individual students will pay $489 per course; the parish will contribute $489 per course and Le Moyne College will contribute $489 per course.  Students will have an advisor provided by Le Moyne through the Sanzone Center who will provide academic advisement.  Students will be evaluated academically by Le Moyne instructors.  They will have a mentor provided by the Diocese who will provide spiritual formation.  Students will be evaluated regarding their capacity for ministry by the Diocese.  They will also have field experience supervised by someone appointed by the Diocese.  Successful students will receive a Certificate from Le Moyne and a commissioning by the Diocese to perform specific ministries.

  1. one by which students do the Certificate Program at Le Moyne without parish sponsorship or diocesan approval.  The cost to students will be $489 per credit, e.g. usually $1467 per course.  Tuition costs here are borne entirely by students.  Students will have an advisor provided by Le Moyne through the Sanzone Center who will provide academic advisement.  Students will be evaluated academically by Le Moyne instructors.  Successful students will receive a Certificate from Le Moyne.

Application process

Potential participants will submit their applications through the Center for Continuing Education at Le Moyne.  All applicants must meet minimum academic standards that demonstrate an ability to do undergraduate college-level work.  Applicants generally will have completed at least sixty credits but students may be evaluated individually.  Anyone who fits these criteria and who would like to offer his or her talents in particular ways to the life of the parish may apply to the program.  People who have done the Formation for Ministry Program are especially encouraged to apply.

To be eligible for track “A” applicants must also be sponsored by a parish and have the approval of the Diocese.

Anyone may apply to do Track “B”.

Ministries and Courses

Since many potential participants in the program will be unavailable to take courses during the day an effort will be made to provide courses in the evening.  Depending on the students’ needs and the instructors’ availability some classroom work may be substituted by long-distance learning through the Internet.  Use may be made of Blackboard.

Unless and until there is a sufficient cohort the College cannot offer special sections of courses for this program.  Certificate students who are enrolled in general undergraduate sections will be identified to the instructors, who may require certificate students to complete additional or different assignments in order better to prepare those students for ministry.

Credits obtained in this program may be applied to an undergraduate degree.
