Updated 7/10/96
Here are a number of e-resources that will enable you to investigate the
development of writing, the materials used, and the importance of the written
word.
-
Culture of the
Book: An e-course at The University of Pennsylvania by Jim O'Donnell.
-
Paleography:
A storehouse of information on all aspects of ancient writing.

-
Duke Papyrus Archive: This
valuable resource
provides electronic access to a large part of the Duke papyrus
collection, which has been conserved and catalogued in the past three years
with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent
federal agency. Over 1,000 catalogue records describe about two thirds of this
largely unpublished collection of papyri from ancient Egypt ranging from
private letters about food and clothing to magical amulets and liturgical
texts.
- Monastery of Christ in the
Desert: A site designed to continue the tradition of the illuminated
manuscript -- on the WWW. There is also included extensive information about
the history of scriptoria
and the evolution of the book.
