Definitions - South Africa
African National Congress (ANC)- the group which led the struggle for majority rule in South Africa
Afrikaaners- decendents of the original Dutch settlers in South Africa
Apartheid- the formerly legally sanctioned system of racial separation
Bantustans- ostensibly independent black homelands created under Apartheid in which all blacks would in principle become citizens
Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu)- largest trade union federation, founded in 1985
Conservative Party- a white political party which opposed the end of Apartheid
Democratic Alliance- merger of the Democratic Party which was the successor to the Progressive Party as the party of white opponents of Apartheid and also the remnants of the National Party
Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa)- second largest union federation in South Africa. Created by merger of former all white federation with several unaffiliated non-white groups
Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)- party founded as Zulu culture group which has strong following among the largest ethnic group in South Africa, the Zulus
National Party- the ruling white party in South Africa until the present majority rule was achieved
National Union of Mineworkers (NUM)- the largest union in South Africa
South African Consultative Committee on Labour Affairs (Saccola)- the principal employers' federation
Stayaways- demonstration strikes motivated by political issues
Stop Order rights- right to have check off of union dues
