Take-home Quiz 2 (and make-up quiz for Quiz 1) due Monday, April 20

As indicated in the “Requirements and Grading” section of the syllabus [emphasis added]

1.  (50%) You will have an opportunity to take two take-home quizzes. These will be handed out at least 4 days before they are due.  Late quizzes will receive a 15% grading penalty for each day they are late.  [If you cannot get a quiz in on time, please let me know you need to take a make-up quiz with a different deadline.] Unless otherwise indicated, please complete the quiz less than 500 words.  All work, except in-class writings, is to be typed.  Quizzes are to be turned in on the date due with a copy emailed to me at kagan@lemoyne.edu.  In addition to the file attachment, please paste the text of your answers into your message.
2.  (50%) Work in class, which may include the following: group work/in-class writings/optional quizzes (optional quizzes can be used to replace take-home quizzes and vice-versa)/optional final paper.  (See
http:/web.lemoyne.edu/~kagan/PAPHOW.html.)

You can take this exam alone or as part of a group (please keep group numbers at four or less). If you do this as a group, please turn in one exam with every member's name on it, making sure every member of your group has a copy. Clearly indicate your sources, including class notes, and conversations with fellow students.

If you do the exam as a group, for each and every member of the group who is to receive credit for your exam, please indicate that group member's contribution(s).   For the take-home quiz answer the following.

Explain how either the Analects, The Tao Te Ching, or Buber's Way of Man according to the Hasidim supports, challenges, changes or adds to your response to your first take home quiz question about excellent people or the question about Aristotle's views on precise answers to moral questions.  Make sure to explain how and/or why this supports, challenges, changes or adds to your response to your first quiz.

If you did not complete Quiz 1, answer this question using the Meno group work See “Instructions for students who need to take a make-up quiz for the first quiz,” below.

Following is guidance for taking the quiz, which I normally would have given in class after distributing the quiz:

1. Make sure to briefly state what you said on the first take-home quiz and why.

2. Make sure to briefly explain how one of the Analects, The Tao Te Ching, or Buber's Way of Man according to the Hasidim relates to what you said on the first take-home quiz and why.

3. Make sure to explain how and/or why this supports, challenges, changes or adds to your response to your first quiz.

One appropriate format for writing your quiz is presented below.

Provide an introductory paragraph describing what follows.  For example,

"My reading of the Tao Te Ching has led me to understand why I was right to choose the three people I did, and provided additional reasons why they were excellent people.  In what follows, I will briefly list the three excellent people I chose and why [1 paragraph].  I will then discuss what I learned from the Tao Te Ching that suggests additional reasons why these are excellent people [1 paragraph]."  Additional insights or concerns will be raised in a concluding section [1 paragraph].

Another example of an introductory paragraph describing what follows:

My reading of Buber's Way of Man according to the Hasidim has led me to understand why I was right to agree with Aristotle about precise answers to moral questions.  In what follows, I will briefly restate how I explained why Aristotle believes that we should not look for the same degree of precision on moral questions as we do in mathematics [1 paragraph].  I will then discuss what I learned from Buber's Way of Man according to the Hasidim that suggests traditional reasons why Aristotle is correct. [1 paragraph]]  Additional insights or concerns will be raised in a concluding section [1 paragraph].

The following section is for students who did not complete Quiz 1

Instructions for students who need to take a make-up quiz for the first quiz

Note:  For students who need to take a make-up quiz for the first quiz, before you write your response to this quiz, find your group work on Meno (complete it if you have not yet completed it).  When you turn in this quiz, email me your answers to the first two questions  in the group work on Meno, and then for credit on both Quiz 1 and Quiz 2, you can use your group work on Meno (instead of Quiz 1) to answer the question given in Quiz 2, amended as follows:

Explain how either the Analects, The Tao Te Ching, or Buber's Way of Man according to the Hasidim supports, challenges, changes or adds to your response to the Meno group work question about excellent people or the question about Aristotle's views on precise answers to moral questions that was asked in Quiz 1.  Make sure to explain how and/or why this supports, challenges, changes or adds to your response to the Meno group work.

Quiz 2, combined with your group work on Meno, will then count for both quizzes.

The question about Aristotle's views on precise answers to moral questions that was asked in Quiz 1 is also an option.
