Quiz 2, due Wednesday, Dec 7, 2016
As indicated on the syllabus, you will have an opportunity to take two
short take-home quizzes, which together will count for 50% of your grade, and
These will be
handed out at least 4 days before they are due. Late quizzes will receive
a 15% grading penalty for each day they are late. Unless otherwise
indicated, please complete the quiz in less than 500 words. All work,
except in-class writings, is to be typed. Quizzes are to be turned in on
the date due with a copy emailed to me at kagan@lemoyne.edu.
In addition to the file attachment, please paste the text of your answers into
your message.
You can take this exam alone or as part of a group (please keep group numbers
at four or less). If you do this as a group, please turn in one exam with every
member's name on it, making sure every member of your group has a copy. When
you revise your essay, try to make sure that what you have written demonstrates
your knowledge of the texts, lectures, and issues. Clearly indicate your
sources, including class notes, and conversations with fellow students.
[If your
grade on the first quiz was 84 or better and you’ve done the group work given
in class today (Dec. 2. 2016), you have the option of having the first quiz
score count for the second quiz as well.
If you or your group choose to exercise
that option (and have not already let me know by turning in the group work with
your choice indicated), please write your name(s) and a brief note on this quiz
indicating your choice and turn that note in to me along with a copy of the
group work (with at least 2 questions answered) that your group did in class
Dec. 2 (in case you missed class, here’s
a link to that group work: http://web.lemoyne.edu/~kagan/210gwIandThouLauTzuPlatoAnalects.html),
by or before Monday, December 5, 2016. ]
If you do the exam as a group,
for each and every member of the group who is to receive credit for your exam,
please indicate that group member's contribution(s). Answer ONE of the following three
questions.
1.
Compare Confucius, Aristotle, and Lao Tzu on overdoing it. What are the advantages and disadvantages of
their views?
2. Compare Confucius, Plato, and Lau Tzu on what sages/philosophers should do
when they find themselves in a corrupt society. Which one seems most prudent? Why?
3. Compare the beginning of the Tao Te Ching to the beginning the Analects
or to the beginning of The Way of Man According to the Teaching of Hasidim. What does either (or what do both) suggest
about how to live?
By or before the due date of Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, please bring your exam to
class and email a copy of your exam to me at kagan@lemoyne.edu.
