In-class Writing on Childhood Heroes

Write about a childhood hero and what she or he meant to you then. Does this heroic figure influence your life now? If so, how? If not, why not?

Who were your childhood heroes? (Or the closest approximation)?

What can you learn from this?

If you have trouble remembering, try remembering your room when you were young. Chances are traces of your heroes were present in your room (posters, books, games).

If you can't remember (or would rather not), describe one of your friend's childhood heroes, or the heroes of some child you now know, and try to answer the questions for them.

If after wrting this, you realize that you would rather not share it, you can write a short response explaing what you learned from writing it and turn that response in instead.

Alternate assignment options:

  1. What do you think of childhood heroes in general?  What are some of their advantages and disadvantages?

  2. What was one of your favorite stories, songs, series, shows, or works of art when you were a child? Why?   Is it still a favorite?  Why/why not?  What does this suggest to you?
