• “Ignatius, Dewey, and Me: How Ignatian and Experiential Pedagogies Have Transformed My Teaching,” Spotlight on Teaching, Religious Studies News, October 2009, 7-8.  This essay, part of a symposium for the 10 year anniversary of the American Academy of Religion Excellence in Teaching Award, illustrates the developments in my teaching philosophy and practice since receiving the award in 2008.
• "Promoting Freedom, Responsibility, and Learning in a General Education Religious Studies Course:  The Learning Covenant a Decade Later," Teaching Theology and Religion (February 2008).  This essay discusses an approach to teaching Religious Studies in a general education or core curriculum that I have experimented with for the last decade, which I call the 'Learning Covenant.' The Learning Covenant brings together various pedagogical theories, including transformational, experiential, contract, and cooperative learning, in an attempt to address diverse learning styles, multiple intelligences, and student learning assessment.
• “Religion and Healing for Physicians’ Assistants,” in Teaching Religion and Healing, Linda Barnes, ed. (AAR Series on Teaching Religion, Oxford University Press, 2006), 293-306.  This essay discusses the Religion and Healing course I have developed which explores the plurality of cultural and religious contexts in which healing occurs with the goal of enabling students to appreciate the overlap between the fields of medicine and religion. 
• "Experiential Learning and Social Justice Action: An Experiment in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning,” Teaching Theology and Religion 7/1 (February 2004):  30-37.  This essay tests the assumption that learning about social justice is done best through experience.  The research for this paper was part of my project as a Carnegie Scholar.
• "Service Learning and the Dilemma of Religious Studies: Descriptive or Normative?" in From Cloister to Commons: Concepts and Models for Service-Learning in Religious Studies, Richard Devine, Joseph A. Favazza, and F. Michael McLain, eds. (Washington, DC: AAHE, 2002). This essay raises questions about what paradigm service learning in religious studies should follow, descriptive or normative. It is drawn from surveys I conducted with 31 colleges and universities (A shorter version of the first essay appeared in CSSR Bulletin, November 2000.)
• "Teaching for the Next Millennium: Top Choices of Significant Works on Teaching and Pedagogy," Spotlight on Teaching Vol. 7, No. 2 (November 1999), 6. My contribution to this essay was to highlight the books and essays that I felt were significant for thinking about teaching in the next millennium. The books I noted were on cooperative learning and contract learning.
• "Assessment for the Right Reason: The Ethics of Outcomes Assessment," Teaching Theology and Religion, 2/1 (February 1999): 14-25. This essay reflects research on the outcomes assessment movement, argues in favor of assessment in undergraduate education on moral grounds, and develops principles for ethical assessment practices.
• “The Learning Covenant: Promoting Freedom and Responsibility in the Religious Studies Classroom," CSSR Bulletin 24/2 (April 1995): 32-37. This essay reflects research of two adult learning theories, independent learning contracts and cooperative learning, and combines the strengths of each into a pedagogical philosophy I call "the learning covenant."
